The 3 Days Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga is the classic Sahara run for anyone based in Marrakech who wants the real dunes rather than the smaller sands closer to the city. Erg Chebbi rises to around 150 metres and behaves like a proper sand sea: soft ridges, changing colours, and a horizon with nothing on it.
The first day crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n Tichka pass and takes you to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate before an overnight in the Dades Valley. The second day carries you through Todra Gorge and out to Merzouga, where camels wait for the ride into camp. The third day brings you home the southern way, with time to see how quickly the land changes back from stone to mountain.

Your driver collects you early from your riad or hotel and heads south out of the palm groves into the High Atlas. The Tizi n Tichka pass tops out above 2260 metres, and the viewpoints on the way up are worth the stops.
Down the other side you branch off to Ait Ben Haddou, the mud-brick ksar built on a hill above the Ounila river. You cross the riverbed on foot and climb through the alleys to the granary at the summit, where the view runs across the whole valley.
After lunch, continue to Ouarzazate for a look at the Taourirt Kasbah and the film studios, then take the road east through Skoura and its palm oasis and El Kelaa des Mgouna, the centre of Moroccan rose cultivation. The day ends in the Dades Valley, among red cliffs and eroded rock towers.

Breakfast, then a short drive to Todra Gorge. The canyon narrows to a corridor barely wide enough for the road and the stream, with sheer limestone on both sides. A walk on the valley floor takes about half an hour and is the best part of the morning.
The road continues through Tinghir and Erfoud, where workshops cut and polish fossils out of stone that was seabed 400 million years ago. Past Erfoud the land goes flat and stony until the dunes appear ahead, an orange wall on an otherwise empty horizon.
You reach Merzouga in the late afternoon. Leave your main luggage, take an overnight bag, and set off by camel into Erg Chebbi. The caravan reaches camp near sunset, leaving time to climb a ridge for the view. Dinner is tagine under the tent, followed by music around the fire.

Wake before dawn for sunrise on the dunes, then ride back to Merzouga for breakfast and a shower at the hotel.
The return journey heads west through Rissani, once the capital of the Tafilalet and still the region trading post, then rejoins the kasbah road through Tinejdad, Tinghir and the Dades. Lunch is taken along the way, usually in Ouarzazate.
From Ouarzazate the road climbs back over the High Atlas, with a final stop for photographs at the Tizi n Tichka viewpoints before the descent into Marrakech. Arrival is in the evening, with drop-off at your accommodation.
Merzouga has the big dunes. Erg Chebbi reaches about 150 metres and looks like the Sahara people picture. Zagora is closer to Marrakech and can be done in two days, but the sand is lower and flatter. If you have three days, go to Merzouga.
Roughly seven hours on day one, five on day two, and eight to nine on day three, spread across stops for sightseeing and meals. The scenery does most of the work.

Standard camps have private sleeping tents with beds and shared washing facilities. Luxury camps add private bathrooms, larger tents and hot water. Both are on the sand inside the erg.

Three days is the sweet spot for Erg Chebbi from Marrakech. Two days only reaches Zagora; four or more adds side valleys but not more sand. This itinerary gets you to the tallest dunes in the country and back without wasting a day.
Departures are private, so the schedule bends around you. Start earlier, stay longer at the gorge, or swap the standard camp for a luxury one, and the rest of the plan still works.
