Day Trip from Marrakech to Ourika Valley

    Tour Details

The Ourika is the closest Atlas valley to Marrakech, about an hour from the city, which makes it the standard half-day escape from the heat. The road follows the river up into the mountains past terraced fields, walnut and cherry trees, and a string of villages built into the slope.

The valley ends at Setti Fatma, a village at 1500 metres where a rough path leads up the hillside to a series of seven cascades. Reaching the first one takes about forty minutes of scrambling over rock and is the main walk of the day; going further needs proper footwear and a head for uneven ground.

Along the way there is usually a stop at a Berber house, where families show how bread is baked and mint tea is made, and on Mondays the valley souk at Tnine Ourika is worth timing the trip around.

    Itinerary

Day Trip from Marrakech to Ourika Valley

Day 1Marrakech - Ourika Valley - Setti Fatma Cascades - Marrakech

Pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech in the morning. The road leaves the city to the south and within half an hour the plain gives way to the first slopes of the High Atlas. The Ourika river runs down the middle of the valley and the road follows it, climbing steadily past villages whose houses are built from the same red earth as the hillside behind them.

There is a stop in the lower valley at a cooperative where argan oil and herbal products are made, and another at a Berber family house. These visits are informal: you see the clay bread oven, the room where the family lives in winter, and you are given mint tea. It is the closest most day visitors get to how the valley actually works.

The road ends at Setti Fatma, at around 1500 metres. From the village a path crosses the river and climbs the hillside towards the seven cascades. The first waterfall is about forty minutes up over loose rock and boulders, with a few simple bridges on the way. It is a scramble rather than a hike, but it is the reason most people come. Anyone who would rather not climb can stay in the village, where restaurants set their tables on platforms directly over the river.

Lunch by the water, then the drive back down the valley, reaching Marrakech in the late afternoon.

    FAQ

How far is the Ourika Valley from Marrakech?

About an hour by road, roughly 60 kilometres south of the city. It is the closest mountain valley to Marrakech, which is why it works as a half day or a relaxed full day.

How difficult is the walk to the cascades?

The first cascade takes around forty minutes over uneven rock and boulders, with some scrambling. Trainers or walking shoes are essential; sandals are not enough. The remaining six are progressively harder and need a local guide.

Do I have to do the climb?

No. Setti Fatma is pleasant on its own, and the riverside restaurants are the point for a lot of visitors. The driver waits either way.

What is the Berber house visit?

An informal stop at a family home in the valley where you are shown the bread oven and living rooms and given mint tea. It is not a staged performance and it is not compulsory.

    When is the souk?

The valley souk at Tnine Ourika runs on Mondays. If you travel that day it is worth building in time for it.

    Is it cooler than Marrakech?

Yes, usually by several degrees, and more the higher you go. In winter bring a warm layer, as Setti Fatma sits at 1500 metres.

    Why Choose This Tour?

This is the shortest way out of Marrakech into real mountains. An hour after leaving the city you are beside a river at 1500 metres with walnut trees overhead and snow on the peaks above in winter. It suits anyone who wants a half day rather than a full one, families who do not want four hours in a car, and anyone whose trip has been all medina and no landscape so far.
