4 Days Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour
    Tour Details

The 4 Days Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour takes the same one-way route across Morocco as the three-day version and adds the day most people wish they had: a full day in and around Merzouga, instead of arriving at sunset and leaving at dawn.

That extra day is where the desert stops being scenery. You visit a nomad family still living in a tent on the hamada, listen to Gnaoua music in Khamlia, drive out to the black volcanic desert and the abandoned mining village of Mfis, and come back to the dunes for a second sunset.

Either side of it, the itinerary covers the classics: the Tizi n Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, the kasbahs of Skoura, Todra Gorge, and the long green line of the Ziz Valley on the way north to Fes.

    Itinerary
4 Days Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour

    Day 1Marrakech - Tizi n Tichka - Ait Ben Haddou - Ouarzazate - Skoura - Dades Valley

Morning pickup in Marrakech and straight up into the High Atlas by the Tizi n Tichka pass. The road climbs past terraced fields and stone villages to just over 2260 metres, with several stops for the view.

You leave the main road for Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen village on the Ounila river that has appeared in more films than any other place in Morocco. There is time to walk up through the ksar to the granary and back down for lunch.

The afternoon runs through Ouarzazate and into the Skoura oasis, a dense grove of date palms scattered with kasbahs, including the much-photographed Amerhidil. From there the road follows the Valley of Roses to the Dades, arriving in time to see the last light on the red cliffs.

Accommodation: Hotel or guesthouse in the Dades Valley

    Day 2Dades - Todra Gorge - Erfoud - Merzouga - Desert Camp

A short morning drive brings you to Todra Gorge, where the canyon squeezes down to a few metres between limestone walls that rise around 300 metres. Walking the valley floor for half an hour is the right way to see it.

Continue east through Tinghir and Erfoud, stopping at a fossil workshop where slabs of ancient seabed are cut and polished. The land empties out, and then Erg Chebbi appears on the horizon.

Arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon. Leave the big bags, take an overnight bag, and ride into the dunes by camel to reach camp at sunset. Dinner under the tent, drums by the fire, and a night on the sand.

Accommodation: Berber desert camp, Erg Chebbi

    Day 3Merzouga - nomad families - Khamlia - black desert - Merzouga

Sunrise from the dunes, then the camels take you back for breakfast and a shower at your hotel.

The rest of the day is spent exploring the area by 4×4. You call on a nomad family living on the open hamada, where tea is made over a small fire and the conversation runs through your driver. You pass the seasonal lake at Dayet Srji, which draws flamingos in spring, and drive out to the black desert, a plain of dark volcanic stone, and the abandoned kohl and galena mines at Mfis.

In the afternoon you stop at Khamlia, a village founded by descendants of sub-Saharan Africans, where a Gnaoua group plays the deep, trance-driven music the region is known for. Back at the dunes for a second sunset before returning to your hotel.

Accommodation: Hotel or kasbah in Merzouga

    Day 4Merzouga - Rissani - Ziz Valley - Midelt - Ifrane - Fes

After breakfast you head north. First stop is Rissani, the old caravan town and seat of the Alaouite dynasty, whose covered market is one of the busiest in the south.

The road then runs up the Ziz Valley, a corridor of hundreds of thousands of date palms squeezed between bare red cliffs, with a viewpoint above the gorge that is worth the stop. You cross the high plateau to Midelt for lunch.

The final stage climbs into the Middle Atlas through the cedar forest near Azrou, where Barbary macaques come down to the roadside, and passes through Ifrane with its steep-roofed houses. Arrival in Fes is in the evening, with drop-off at your riad.

4 Days Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour
    FAQ
What does the fourth day actually add?

A full day around Merzouga instead of a sunset arrival and a dawn departure. Nomad camps, Khamlia, the black desert and a second sunset on the dunes. It is the difference between seeing the Sahara and spending time in it.

Do we sleep two nights in the camp?

One night at the camp on the sand and one night in a hotel or kasbah in Merzouga, which gives you a proper shower and a real bed in the middle of the trip. Two camp nights can be arranged instead if you prefer.

    Is the 4×4 excursion included?

Yes, the half-day circuit on day three is included, along with the visit to Khamlia and the nomad family.

Can this run from Fes to Marrakech?

Yes, in either direction, at the same price. Tell us where you want to start and end.

    Is it suitable for children?

Yes. Families do this route often. Car seats can be provided, and the camel ride can be replaced by a 4×4 transfer to the camp for small children.

How cold does the desert get at night?

From December to February it can fall close to zero after dark. Camps provide thick blankets, but bring a warm jacket. In summer the nights stay mild.

    Why Choose This Tour?

Three days across Morocco works, but it is a lot of road for the time. Four days keeps the same route and gives the desert a full day of its own, which is where most travellers say the trip actually turned into something they remember.

Private vehicle, private driver, one-way logistics handled. You end in Fes with your bags, not back where you started.
